使他在軟弱時,能夠堅強不屈;

不至空有幻想而缺乏行動;

並有遠大的目標;

先懂得駕馭自己;

Fatherhood is Under Strain (Part I)
Written by Ernie Lee

Father's Day is one of the most meaningful holidays in the world. It represents the day when we tell our father how much he means to us and how happy we are, to have him in our life. Though you don't need a special occasion to convey all this to him, by saying it on Father's Day can make him feel special.

A survey in the U.K. revealed that nearly 75% of fathers said that spending time with their family would be the ideal Father's Day.Only 10% of fathers said their ideal Father's Day would be to have time to themselves.

Although majority of men believe that fathers today are under tremendous strain. Fathers feel they fall short. What can fathers do? Here are several suggestions:

Take the Time to be a Father.

When my children were young, we were playing ping pong at a community centre. I overheard a friend of my son spoke these words: "You're lucky. Your dad will play ping pong with you. I can't get my dad to do anything with me." I listened to that comment with a strange blend of pride and sadness. On one hand, it felt good to know that my son was hearing what a great dad he has. However, my heart also ached for that boy who longed to spend some time with his father.

This summer, take time to be with your children. When they want to play with you----stop and play with them. Take time to look at the beauty of summer and point out God's creation to them. Ephesians 6:4 reminded us: "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." I believe all Christian fathers want to give their children direction for living. We as fathers give our children direction by our way of discipline. By discipline, I mean instruction and correction. When our children have disobeyed us we need to discipline them. But, we need to remember not to be too harsh so as to provoke by exasperating them.

Fathers Need to Pray for their Children.

Christian fathers need to pray for their children. When we pray for our children, we are asking God to help, to guide and protect beyond our abilities to do so. All human fathers have limits, but our Heavenly Father is omnipotent and omnipresent. To reinforce the importance of a father's prayer for their children, let me quote from the comments on "A Father's Prayer" by Scott Williams, February 4, 2014.

In June, 1942, the U.S. five-star General Douglas Mac Arthur was named National Father of the Year. The honour came just three months after he moved his family to the Philippines to lead the U.S. Pacific campaign of World War II. His statement in receiving the award was ended by a heartfelt prayer for his son.

In the early days of war, MacArthur acknowledged his dependence on a Heavenly Father when he composed "A Father's Prayer":

"Build me a son, oh Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

"Build me a son whose wishbone will not be where his back bone should be; a son who will know Thee, and to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

"Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenges. Here let him learn to stand up to the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

"Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget to weep; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

"And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor so that he may always be serious, and yet never take him-self too seriously.

"Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength.

"Then I, his father, will dare to whisper: I have not live in vain."

What is your prayer for your children? You'll probably never achieve the level of accomplishment such as General Douglas MacArthur, but when you come to the end of this earthly journey, what will make you whisper "I have not lived in vain"?

Fathers are Concerned for their Children's Future.

Our Heavenly Father is concerned for our future. God wants to have destiny that is completed when we get to heaven. God sent his only begotten Son so that we might learn from his example. Jesus reminded us of this fact in John 14:6 when He said: "I am the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through me." When we accept the grace and salvation of Jesus Christ, then we become God's adopted sons and daughters.

We need to keep in mind that our days are limited. We are all pilgrims in this journey of life. If we let God have his way, then one day we reach the end of our earthly journey and reach our heavenly destination.

God has a place in heaven for all of His children. God wants us to make our days count for his glory during the journey. (To be continued)
