【新聞後記】學習勒住舌頭的功課

 

一年復始,萬象更新!今年農曆新年也在 1 月份,故 1 月的新年氣氛特別濃厚。所謂「忘記背後,努力面前」,很多人在新年,都會立志,希望新一年有所進步。在眾多立志或新年願望中,最普遍的相信離不開:減肥、做運動、專心工作、努力讀書等等。作為基督徒,應該再加上屬靈的立志。大多數基督徒會立志好好讀聖經,多花時間研讀神的話,好好追求;努力傳福音,拯救靈魂;又或者更熱心事奉,勤作主工。但當中有多少人會立志學習或操練舌頭的功課呢?

去年 11 月國殤紀念日前,本國著名冰棒球評論員切裡(Don Cherry)因為在電視節目上發表一番被認為帶有歧視性言論後,隨即被體育電視頻道 Sportsnet 免去 Hockey Night 內的 Coach's Corner 環節主持職位,並引發廣泛爭議。

一向以敢言及出位言論見稱的 Don Cherry,在節目中批評密西沙加市及多倫多市的新移民,甚少佩戴紀念在戰爭中陣亡士兵的罌粟襟花。他說:「你們......喜歡我們的生活、喜愛我們的牛奶及蜜糖,但至少應花幾塊錢買一朵襟花......這些人(陣亡士兵)為你們的生活付出代價,你享受在加拿大的生活,而這些人付出了最大的代價。」

Don Cherry 不當言論被撤職

Don Cherry 的評論引起軒然大波,政治人物如多倫多市長莊德利和密西沙加市長康寶麗,都在社交媒體上批評切裡失言,並重申肯定移民對本國的貢獻。專門處理觀眾對電視節目投訴的加拿大廣播標準委員會(Canadian Broadcast Standards Council)更表示,接獲太多投訴,將會以一貫方式處理,暫時不會再接受有關的投訴。

85 歲的 Don Cherry 最初一直拒絕認錯和道歉,但其後立場有所軟化,表示如果可以重來,他會比較小心選擇自己所用的字眼,不應該用「你們這些人」、而是應該用「所有人」來作為主語詞彙,這樣就不會引發問題了。

雖然批評 Don Cherry 言論帶有歧視移民色彩的說法佔多數,但不少他的支持者感到失去一位本國冰球界大師級人物是個損失,因為很多人都是看著 Don Cherry 的冰球評論節目長大的。部分支持者更上街抗議,認為 Don Cherry 只是實話實說,並不存在歧視,電視台的決定是小題大做,反應過大。

言論自由亦要為言行負責

有關注人權及種族關係的律師表示,加拿大雖然是一個言論自由的國家,但凡牽涉種族、宗教、性別、性取向的話題,必須小心謹慎。若對方感到被冒犯,便有可能構成帶有歧視的言論 。尤其 Don Cherry 是公眾人物,他在大氣電波上的言論,有很大影響力,甚至代表電視台立場,所以他有必要為他的言行負上一定責任。

1979 年「W5 」事件爆發。 CTV 電視台「W5」節目製作特輯「校園大平賣」,內容指大學專業學位都給「外國人」報讀了,使本地白人因額滿而望門輕嘆。矛頭直指華人,歪曲事實,引起全國華人公憤,華人社區組織「對抗 W5 事件行動委員會」,聯絡全國十六個城市的華人社區,對 CTV 種族歧視作出有力反控,致使 CTV 終於低首認錯,並向全國傳媒及華人社區公開道歉,表示保證今後不會重蹈覆轍,並製作特備十分鐘的節目介紹正面的華人形像以作補償。

前萬錦市副市長貝爾言論激發爭議

1995 年 6 月,當時萬錦市副市長貝爾(Carol Bell)在議會上發表的言論,稱越來越多的華人商場充斥萬錦市,大批中文招牌令原有的白人感到不快,令白人遷出萬錦市。此番言論令華人社區極度不滿,發動大多倫多市及周邊城市的 12 位市長發表聯名宣言,並聯合各大社團及商界支持,在英文報章刊登半版廣告,主要內容為:「不支持 Carole Bell 的立場,肯定包括華裔加拿大人在內的不同族裔對建設加拿大的貢獻,重申不論背景如何,所有移民都應受到加拿大的歡迎。」事件從 1995 年 6 月底開始,至 9 月底才逐漸平息,歷時 4 個月。

病從口入,禍從口出;一言興邦,一言喪邦!但願在新的一年,大家彼此勸勉,在日常生活中操練學習慎言的功課。「......原來我們在許多事上都有過失;若有人在話語上沒有過失,他就是完全人,也能勒住自己的全身。我們若把嚼環放在馬嘴裡,叫牠順服,就能調動牠的全身。看哪,船隻雖然甚大,又被大風催逼,只用小小的舵,就隨著掌舵的意思轉動。這樣,舌頭在百體裡也是最小的,卻能說大話。看哪,最小的火能點著最大的樹林;舌頭就是火,在我們百體中,舌頭是個罪惡的世界,能污穢全身,也能把生命的輪子點起來,並且是從地獄裡點著的。」(雅各書3:2-6)

謙卑 Humility

敬畏耶和華心存謙卑,就得富有、尊榮、生命為賞賜。箴言 22:4
Humility is the fear of the LORD; its wages are riches and honor and life. Proverbs 22:4

凡事不可結黨,不可貪圖虛浮的榮耀;只要存心謙卑,各人看別人比自己強。腓立比書 2:3
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves. Philippians 2:3

嫉妒 Envy

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. Proverbs 14:30

生氣 Anger

當止住怒氣,離棄忿怒;不要心懷不平,以致作惡。詩篇 37:8
Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. Psalm 37:8

好生氣的人,不可與他結交;暴怒的人,不可與他來往。箴言 22:24
Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered. Proverbs 22:24

憂愁 Worry

你們不要憂愁、因靠耶和華而得的喜樂是你們的力量。尼希米記 8:10
Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10

主雖使人憂愁, 還要照他諸般的慈愛發憐憫。耶利米哀歌 3:32
Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. Lamentations 3:32

凡勞苦擔重擔的人,可以到我這裡來,我就使你們得安息。馬太福音 11:28

患難 Trouble, Suffering

義人多有苦難,但耶和華救他脫離這一切。詩篇 34:19

神是我們的避難所,是我們的力量,是我們在患難中隨時的幫助!詩篇 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1
